Multi-Frequency Impedance Measurement — Impedance Spectrum Between Pulses

Advanced Monitoring & Control

Measuring how a material or tissue's resistance to electrical current changes across different frequencies is a well-established way to learn about its structure and condition — used across biology, food science, and materials testing. Multi-Frequency Impedance Measurement brings that same approach into the generator: instead of a single impedance reading, the system sweeps a defined frequency range and returns a full spectrum.

Measuring the same load before and after pulses have been applied, and seeing how the spectrum changed, gives an indication of how the treatment is progressing.

Measuring impedance yourself usually means bringing in an external LCR meter — and that comes with two practical problems. First, every measurement requires physically disconnecting the load from the generator: even idle, the generator's own output circuitry sits in parallel with the load, and leaving it connected would distort the reading rather than give a clean measurement. Second, if the LCR meter's leads are connected to the load while pulses are being applied, they need to withstand the pulse voltage themselves — unless the instrument's own insulation is rated for that level, applying a pulse with the meter still connected puts the equipment at risk.

The measurement is performed between pulses, not during them. A low-amplitude signal is applied at each measurement frequency through the same electrodes used for treatment, the response is measured, and the impedance at that frequency is computed. This is repeated across the frequency range to build the spectrum.

Because the measurement runs through the generator’s own output path and the same electrodes, there’s no separate LCR instrument to connect or disconnect between pulses, and no separate insulation requirement to worry about — the generator already handles both the pulse and the measurement signal on the same path.
